The Story

"The first thing I see, when I close my eyes, are lights. They emerge, a little like flashes, from a black but luminous background. It's as if these lights are manifestations of energy, coming from a background that isn't dark. Sometimes, a path appears, and it seems to draw me along even more than I get there. Faster, always faster, on this path amidst the sparkles. These are the first sensations."

"The moon landing of a NASA shuttle: this is the spectacle I expect, as my gaze escapes Robert Irwin's Untitled, From Dawn to Dusk, a former military hospital on the outskirts of Marfa. It wasn't moonscapes Irwin had in mind, but Dutch landscapes. Renovating this vestige, once part of the life of the D. A. Russell base, he repositioned the edges of the windows with great precision, just above the eye. One is encouraged to stand on tiptoe to look out. But the landscape is just beyond view."
