The Story

Before Black Lives Matter and #MeToo shook America and the Western world, bell hooks showed in this incisive essay that the abolition of racism and the eradication of sexism go hand in hand. Without feminism, the anti-racist struggle remains a male affair. Without anti-racism, feminism risks serving as a conduit for racial domination. The author insists on the validity of the rage that drives the masses and black youth, and on the need to turn it into a force for radical social change. She proposes a revolutionary theory and practice, the goal of which is a united community based on real equality and the willingness of all to work for change.

Translated from English by Ségolène Guinard.

GLORIA JEAN WATKINS, known by her pen name BELL HOOKS, born in 1952, is an American intellectual, feminist, and activist. Translated into many languages, her works are considered among the most important on the subject in the United States and have been very popular in France in recent years. Éditions Divergences has already translated and published three of her books, including The Will to Change and On Love.
